How to Mix & Match Men’s Formalwear

By Karen Morales
For a man who likes to experiment with his usual suit and tie combo, try the following fashion risks.

A mixture of different patterns, such as a striped tie and a checkered dress shirt can be tricky to pull off, especially if you’re not keen on looking like some sort of clown. The rule of thumb on pairing a gingham shirt with a patterned tie is to make sure that the shirt is a lighter shade than the tie. Sticking within the same color family also complicates things less when mixing patterns.

Unexpected color combinations, such as a brown tie with a blue shirt and navy jacket, can be aesthetically pleasing and sartorially rewarding. Play around with complimentary colors, there’s a whole spectrum of possibilities.
